Boris Johnson resigns as UK foreign secretary because of May's Brexit plans

Boris Johnson has resigned as foreign secretary, he is the third minister to walk out in 24 hours rather that back Theresa May's plans for a soft Brexit.

Pressure had been increasing on the foreign secretary since fellow brexiteer David Davis resigned as Brexit Secretary on Sunday night, swiftly followed by his number 2, Steve Baker.

The prime minister has thanked Boris for his work and his replacement has not been announced as of yet. Johnson had referred to May's attempt at a Brexit plan as beeing akin to “polishing a turd”.

His departure will increase the crisis in the UK government and increase the chances she could face a vote of no confidence.

One senior Brexiteer suggested more resignations could follow if May sticks to her plan for a “common rulebook” with Brussels: “They’ll keep going, one by one, until she either junks Chequers or goes.”.

Johnson's resignation was announced monday afternoon as labour MPs were being briefed about the government's soft brexit plan.

Johnson told the PM that she is suffocating the Brexit dream. He said today that the "dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

In his letter of resignition he claimed the PM was leading the UK into a "semi-Brexit" with the "status of a colony". May however insists her plans are "the best way to honour" the Brexit vote amid a deepening crisis.

The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019
